“Wear a crown of eyes around your head”, said the teacher at the art school in BARCELONA. The short, round-faced young man did just that – and he never took it off.
His name MIRO, means “he looked” in Spanish. What better name for this silent artist whose candid blue gaze was to record every last detail of his CATALAN environment and the vast reaches of the stars.
Combining abstract art with surrealism, JOAN MIRO’s oeuvre is internationally respected. He developed his own unique style of imagery derived from elements of CATALAN folk art and the art of children.
His close relationship with FERNAND MOURLOT resulted in the creation of over 1,000 different lithographic editions. MIRO’s process of automatic drawing, allowing the hand to move randomly on the surface, leaving the artwork to chance, enable him to create works that were genuine reflections of himself, an integral part of his popularity. A true master of the printmaking medium, MIRO received the Grand Prize for Graphic work at the VENICE Biennale in 1954, and his work was included in the Documenta Exhibition in KASSEL the following year.
A man whose art rose to international acclaim with the help of the Surrealist movement, MIRO was honoured with many retrospectives during his lifetime and worked until he passed away of a heart disease in December 1983, PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN.
