Versatility in his use of media has carried NORMAN CATHERINE from assemblage works to airbrush drawings, paintings, lithography and tapestry design, fibreglass, wire, and metal, each executed with impeccable skill. Assemblage would be “found” objects such as cans, wire, tin, driftwood and matchboxes creatively arranged and decorated in vibrant colours.
He incorporates surrealistic elements into his work, using humour with a dark overtone to confront political issues. Creative combinations of imagery characterise his art, including rough-edged comical and nightmarish forms in bright cartoon colours.
NORMAN CATHERINE is one of SOUTH AFRICA’S leading contemporary artists, having earned a solid reputation. Throughout his career, he has represented SOUTH AFRICA in major international exhibitions such as the VENICE Biennale, Art BASEL, and has been included in numerous important shows in NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, LONDON and BERLIN.
