See all artistsBORN 1952, LADY GREY, SOUTH AFRICA
Since completing his Fine Art Degree at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town in 1976, SIMON has studied Italian Renaissance, taught and worked as a full time artist. Since the late 1970’s he has worked in oils, mosaics and watercolour sketchbooks.
His work captures the demands of the viewer, by depicting the most incompatible of objects and images together, using splendid skills of a draughtsman and colourist. The canvases may include images of lead sinkers he found while snorkelling round the shoreline, snapshots of KAROO landscapes, PICASSO harlequins or beautiful depictions of places and people. His artistic genius lies in the fact that he combines elements not having any relation and still creates harmonious composition. Earlier paintings were often layered with a grey, cooler veneer, with a certain silence reflecting the realities around him. His later work is packed with colour and emotion, the images are complex, beautiful and mysterious, forcing the viewer to absorb.
SIMON STONE is recognised as one of SOUTH AFRICA’S finest artists and his work is held in corporate, private and public collections in SOUTH AFRICA and internationally.
His collections are shown worldwide and in select corporate collections including Alexander Forbes, Mobil Oil, Anglo American Collection, Pendock Collection, JOHANNESBURG Art Gallery, SOUTH AFRICAN National Gallery, The Gencor Collection and The University of the Witwatersrand.
